Full Circle: Honoring the Potter Who Sparked It All

At Clay Encounters, we often reflect on the journeys that bring us to clay—the people, the places, and the quiet, transformative moments that shape our creative paths. For our founder, Reema Abu Hassan, that journey began in 2016 during her final semester studying architecture, when she enrolled in her very first pottery course. The course was taught by none other than ceramicist Brian Dougan—the person she credits entirely for igniting her love for clay.

What began as a short course during a busy semester planted the seed for what would eventually become Clay Encounters. Reema often says that Clay Encounters would not exist without Brian’s teaching, support, and deep love for ceramics. His way of working with clay—thoughtful, intuitive, and patient—left an indelible mark on her. It was a turning point that would shift her path from architecture toward a lifelong exploration of craft and making.

In 2022, we were incredibly honored to welcome Brian to Qatar, where he led a series of workshops at our studio. He taught not only our members, but also fellow ceramicists from across the country. Having him teach in the space that his influence helped shape was a powerful full-circle moment—a quiet celebration of how inspiration travels, evolves, and returns.

Today, his image hangs on our studio wall as a constant reminder of beginnings, mentorship, and the importance of nurturing curiosity in others. His presence here felt like a homecoming—not just for Reema, but for the spirit of Clay Encounters itself.

From a class in 2016 to a studio built with community and love—thank you, Brian. You continue to be part of our story in the most meaningful ways.
